How To Care For Orthodontic Problems From Home
Many orthodontic issues are fine to be handled at home - at least temporarily - until you are able to be seen at the office. However, if you’re in severe pain or unsure what you should do, it’s important to call us as soon as possible for advice or an appointment time. We want to make sure you’re comfortable and your treatment stays on track, so never hesitate to reach out with concerns. Now, let’s talk about the most common problems and what you can do to relieve them.
Broken or Loose Brackets
Sometimes brackets can have a mind of their own, loosening up or completely falling off your tooth. If your bracket has come off or has detached from the tooth but still attached to the wire, here’s what you can do:
- If still attached to the wire, leave the bracket in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to protect your mouth from irritation.
- If the bracket has completely fallen off, store it in a bag or container to bring along with you to your appointment.
- Stay away from foods that can worsen the problem - anything hard or sticky!
Loose or Uncomfortable Wires
When wires shift or become loose, they can poke the inside of your mouth and cause pain and irritation. To help a loose or poking wire:
- Carefully push the wire back into place using a pencil eraser or a pair of tweezers that have been sanitized.
- Use orthodontic wax to cover up the piece of the wire that is poking.
- If absolutely necessary, you can trim off excess wire with sterilized nail clippers.
Loose or Lost Rubber Bands
Small rubber bands - or ligatures - are used to help hold wires in place. If a rubber band is loose or gone:
- If the ligature is still attached, gently use tweezers to position it back correctly.
- If the ligature is gone, that’s okay! Your braces will continue to work as they should and we will replace them at your next appointment.
Pain and Discomfort
Some mild discomfort can be expected after an adjustment. If you find that your teeth or gums are sore, you can help that by:
- Taking an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen.
- Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.
- Alter your diet to include more soft foods until the pain has passed. Think mashed potatoes, smoothies, soups - maybe even a milkshake!
Sores or Irritation
If your braces have caused irritation in the form of small sores or blisters, you can relieve that discomfort by:
- Applying orthodontic wax to wires or brackets that are rubbing.
- Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater or an antiseptic mouthwash.
- Steer clear of foods that are spicy or acidic.
